Get the best player available. We/Crean are way too late in the game to be only recruiting IN players. 3 or 4 years from now hopefully we'll be getting all the good IN and regional players, but we need the best of the best from in state, not leftovers. Not that Van Trese is necessarily a left over, but we only have 1 scholarship left for next year.

Watford is one of the best scorers in aau. I think hes averaging over 24pts/gm. From his videos it looks like hes more of a wing type player but he can also block some shots. He's a great 3pt shooter and hes 6-7 He needs to work on his rebounding quite a bit (the main reason I want Franklin over him).

No, SVT is not nearly the talent that Franklin and Watford are. He's a role player at best where as the other two could grow into the leader of future squads. I think franklin would dominate SVT if they went 1 on 1 against eachother. Franklin would give us just as many rebounds, more points, and hes a vocal leader

Hulls, Elston, Dumes, Moore, Lewis, Barnett. Thats a good start in recruiting Indiana IMO. He's going hard after Teague, maybe Byrd as well. You have to get the best players available not just settle for an Indiana kid because hes an Indiana kid. I'd sure as hell take Franklin or Watford way over SVT. I think Crean is waiting those recruitments out before SVT gets an offer.

seen the Hulls one before — he will be very good after a little time in the weight room and some collegiate coaching. Bobby C –> one word: WOW! taking the contact from defenders and still finishing his shot! great blocking ability for a big man and looks like good foot work — hopefully his man on man defense is just as good.

gosh i wish i wasn't so busy at work today so i could have been more involved in these great discussions/debates!!! lets get both franklin and van treese!! well if it were only that easy … i like van treese . i think his ability and versatility can play into TC's style of basketball … i too like roger franklin, and agree with Kelin, we could REALLY use another wing player who can bring “rod wilmont” like energy back on the court … i guess id say id be thoroughly pleased either way, and EXTREMELY disappointed if we didn't land either!

I find it interesting that the culture of basketball these days is away from big men. Now post players are more driven to play facing the basket than back to the basket. They work more on ball handling than jump hooks……

I think you have to take a serious look at Van Treese, given the LN pipeline and the fact he's a nice big from Indiana, but we might be getting overloaded at that position.

With that said, however, picking up a solid big man is never an easy task, and consider how frequently we've had big man issues in terms of numbers. I'll take another solid big man role player, quite honestly.

I may be totally wrong, but aren't Watford and Franklin more power three's or small power forwards?

Also scoring/shooting threat and go-to-guy are not the same thing. Every team needs a guy they can count on to handle the scoring load game in and game out.

Although I agree with you, in that I too am worried about our inside game. It's a tough call. We need more talent, but we also need more inside help.

Junkman I am guilty and probaly others of being tainted by numbers and stars given that has been the focus over the davis and sampson years….have to retrain my mind to a guy who is building a team, getting Indiana kids to stay home, and having position depth. I hate to say it….similar to Purdon't and Matt Whiner…

Creek, Hulls, Story, Roth and Williams are all capable of being a shooting/scoring threat…That is why I'm wanting another big man…

I think we are thin up front and with Pritchard / Elston / Copobianco / Jobe we only have 4 guys on the roster 6'6 or taller…In the Big Ten you need size, rebounding and second chance points…If we go up against teams like Minnesota / Michigan State and Wisconsin who have 3 or 4 6'10+ players they can rotate on and off the court, we are in trouble…

Franklin and Watford may be more exciting to watch, but they would be a luxury in helping us win games…Rather than another big man to contribute on both ends of the court…

Jobe is a project…Elston / Bobby C and Pritchard will be stretched too thin if they are the only big men on the roster…Van Trese is a top 100 player who rebounds, defends and is active around the rim…I'm not sure on why this board is so down on him of late, but I would only ask that we consider the need for size…

I don't know a ton about Watford…..As far as creek, from what I have heard is, he is one of the best scorers in the 09' class because of the multiple ways he can score. And Yes I see Hulls being another go to guy big shot guy….Looking forward to watching this team grow……Here is a quote from Creek….

Scoring the basketball will surely be Creek’s best claim to fame at IU if he does want to prove his doubters wrong, and that’s exactly what Crean hopes he will do. “He just wanted me to do what I do best, and that’s score,” Creek said about his expected role for the Hoosiers. “I can drive, I can take a man off the dribble, I can shoot over the top, and I can definitely shoot when I’m open. I see the whole floor, I create points for other people. If a guy’s open, I kick the ball out.”

When talking about his skill set, Creek finds many similarities between himself and former Hoosier phenom Eric Gordon, who also happened to be his favorite college player this year. “[Gordon] reminds me so much of myself. Both of us are scorers and both of us can shoot the ball very well. He just does a lot of stuff that I can do,” Creek said. He also said that he models himself somewhat after N.O. Hornets point guard Chris Paul, whose invitee-only camp he plans to attend next weekend, as well.

Then I guess we agree that STV should probably be third on the list between him, Franklin and Watford.

Is Creek a go-to-guy? Not questioning you, I just don't know. Possibly Williams? I also think Hulls could develop into a go-to-guy. Not in the sense that he'll average 20 a night, but he seems like the type of player who down the line you'll feel very comfortable with the ball in hands when the game is on the line.
