Crean talks newest 2008 recruit, Malik Story

by in Recruiting | June 30th, 2008

mstory.jpgHere is an IU release on Malik Story, the latest and likely the last recruit to join the 2008 class:

Bloomington, Indiana – Indiana University Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Crean has announced that Malik Story, a 6-5 forward/guard who led Artesia (Calif.) High School to two state championships, has accepted a scholarship offer and will attend IU beginning this fall.

“To get someone of Malik’s ability this late in the year is really exciting for all of us,” added Crean. “He is a proven winner who knows how to win championships, and has improved a great deal over the last few years. Malik was off of the recruiting radar for some time because of his early commitment, but nonetheless, he has always proven to be someone that plays at a high level, that wins, and that gets better.”

The Los Angeles product averaged 13.0 points as a sophomore and 14.7 points as a junior at Artesia H.S., helping his prep team to a 66-3 record during that two-year run. He chose IU over USC, Oregon and Georgetown.

He also played on a summer national championship team with UCLA’s Kevin Love and Arizona’s Chase Budinger.

“We are very fortunate to have him coming to Indiana with the ability to step in and help contribute in our program right away,” said Crean. “He has built his range and his ability to get to the rim, and we look for to helping him improve in those areas. We love his strength, and we love the fact that he loves the game and wants to improve. It is a pleasure to have him.”

Severance package details for Richard Greenspan

by in Media | June 30th, 2008

greenspan3.jpgForgive us for being a little late to the party on this — yours truly is under the weather — but both Hoosier Nation and The Hoosier Scoop have uncovered the severance package details for everyone’s favorite athletic director, Rick Greenspan.

Despite his involvement in the Kelvin Sampson scandal, Greenspan will leave Bloomington in December with a healthy severance package. He’ll get $369,000 on or around January 15, 2009 and $4,600 monthly in the calendar year of 2009.

And if that wasn’t enough, he’ll get $1,400 monthly on top of that in the event that he’s unable to secure “substantially equivalent employment.” (Translation: He’ll be getting this money as well.)

The only other item of note beside the legal lingo that says Greenspan can’t sue IU: He can write a book about the whole fiasco. It’s hard to say what the market for the said title would be, but you can be sure Richard has considered this or it wouldn’t be in the agreement.

Here’s a link to the five-page agreement.

NCAA advises IU to halt the barnstorming tour

by in Media | June 27th, 2008

The Barnstorming Tour, which is run annually by Criss Beyers, has likely seen its last stop. According to our friend Chris Korman of the H-T/Hoosier Scoop, the NCAA has advised the Big Ten to not allow the tour to take place.

Criss Beyers, a local AAU coach who has run the tours for six years, learned late yesterday that the NCAA has “strongly advised” the Big Ten not to allow the annual tour to continue. Beyers said that the NCAA has had questions about the tour in recent years but has always ultimately declared it to be acceptable. Beyers wasn’t sure what precipitated the NCAA’s altered outlook on the tour.

Not much else to say about this. IU is at the mercy of the NCAA overlords until their punishment is announced. My personal take is that it’s a harmless event that gives fans across the state an opportunity to see the incoming players, but given the current climate in Bloomington, the NCAA will get its wish and the event will cease to exist. Bummer.

Around the Hall: NBA Draft reaction

by in Media | June 27th, 2008

A pair of Hoosiers landed in the first round in Thursday’s NBA Draft. Eric Gordon became the first top 10 pick out of IU since Calbert Cheaney in 1993, going No. 7 to the Los Angeles Clippers. Birmingham native D.J. White was selected with the 29th overall pick by the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons then traded White to the Seattle Supersonics for two second-round picks. We’ve gathered some links to coverage and reaction from the draft and look forward to your comments.
