Tim Buckley will likely be top assistant to Crean

by Alex Bozich in Media | April 8th, 2008

The buzz this evening is that former Ball State head coach Tim Buckley will follow Tom Crean to Indiana and become the top assistant to the new head coach. Buckley was originally on Crean’s staff at Marquette before coaching at Ball State for six seasons. Buckley then went to Iowa as an assistant to Steve Alford before returning to Marquette.

Buckley’s most notable moment as a head coach came in 2001 when he led Ball State to wins over Kansas and UCLA in the Maui Invitational. As an assistant coach at Marquette, he played a big part in bringing Dwyane Wade to Milwaukee. His strong mid-western ties should bode well for recruiting the Big Ten.

As long as Dakich isn't there, I'm happy with anyone... Anyone know anything about Ray McCallum?
  • ricbraun
They should keep him if only because his son if a 4-star point guard from the class of 2010. And he wasn't named in the NCAA report. And the players love him. So I guess thats 3 reasons
  • Disco_Briscoe
I'd say gone...clean your hands of eveyone involved with Sampson.
  • easy
I think he's got another assistant lined up as well, he just hasn't been named yet. He was with Crean when I met him 2 days ago and he shot a little bit in Assembly before the guys had individuals. Not sure of his name though since Marquette took down the assistants under Crean, otherwise I'd google him and let you know.
  • I believe you're referring to Benny Seltzer, who played for Sampson at Washington State and was a longtime assistant to Sampson at Oklahoma. Not sure how I feel about him coming to IU, if indeed he does.
  • easy
Yep, good call. That's the guy.

I think Ray is gone. It'd be nice to have him, but let's be honest, the only reason we want him around is to snag his son as a recruit. Coach McCallum would be a great recruiter for us, but I think he wants to be a head coach again and is going to find a place to either do that or where it will put him in position to do that.
  • HoosierSmitty
So what's next year's lineup assuming no one transfers or is allowed to come back?

    Jordan Crawford
    Matt Roth
    Brandon McGee
    Tom Pritchard
    Eli Holman

    Bench
    Brett Finklemeier
    Kyle Taber

We gotta find some recruits! Maybe Holloway comes back. Ebanks is lost. I still think ultimately Bassett and Ellis will be back...but under a super tight leash.
  • HoosierSmitty
I forgot about the Big D....DeAndre Thomas
  • holloway is gone.
    committed to xavier yesterday: http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?...
  • easy
    Well that sucks.
  • Is he still going to be drawing Ctrl+Alt+Del?
  • drode
Peegs has reported that Holloway is not coming to Indiana. He is going to a school that was not even on his list but I can't tell because I am not a subscriber.
  • xfactor9600
Holloway is rumored to be going to Xavier according to the Cincy press.
  • Holloway committed to Xavier.

Buckley was a pretty decent coach at BSU. I caught a couple of their games back when he coached and his teams played really hard for him. I feel like Crean can do no wrong.

It's tough to say anyone played a big role in landing Dwayne Wade at Marquette.

It's not like they won him in a bitter recruiting battle. In fact, I believe the only other school to offer him a scholarship was the mighty Illinois State Red Birds.

Crean and Co. took a chance on Wade and it paid off, BIG TIME.

i'm not trying to knock Crean or Buckley, but to say Buckley played a 'big' role in getting Wade to Marquette seems a bit of a stretch.

Not a knock on Crean or
  • They took a chance on him, so I'd say that's a pretty big role. They saw something in him that all of the other schools missed.

As Big A noted, Terrell Holloway is going to Xavier. This is a big blow to the program because this is a kid that could have played the point from Day 1. He seemed excited about Crean but I guess it wasn't going to happen.

Chalk up another feather in the ole Sampson cap. I hope the NCAA bands him from coaching a decade.
  • Actually, I hope they sentence him to coaching New Jersey Institute of Technology.

    For life.

Holloway to Xavier...what a load of crap....very disappointing. I had hope for him.

TC is heavily recruiting big men so this makes me think that AB and JE will be back even more if he knew he was going to have holes at the guard position why would he only be recruiting those big men. I don't think anyone will transfer Eli Holman def. won't he isnt going to want to sit out another year, Jordan Crawford already said he loves the idea of and play style of Tom Crean, Brandon McGee will be able to get his dunks in this offense.

If Ellis and Basset come back the start line up will be as follows

    Basset
    Crawford
    Ellis
    Josh Harrelson (JUCO Guy)
    Holman

to me basset wont ever come off the court if he comes back so second team will be

    Basset
    Roth
    McGee
    Taber/Thomas
    Ben-Eze(JUCO)

I think we will be pretty tough to beat not a top 25 team but not a push over team either we will be at least .500 in the Big Ten and might make the big dance this is all banking on Basset and Ellis returning though
  • Disco_Briscoe
I read Ben-Eze is HS. Anyone else in the mix other than these two?
  • sierracoach
Harrellson at this point appears more likely to end up at UK--maybe Purdue or Illinois as well--than at IU. Ben-Eze just injured a knee and may not be physically ready by October anyway. Add to that the fact that Crean doesn't even know how many scholarships he'll have to work with after NCAA's August/Sept findings, and he's in a huge hole to climb out of. I'd really like to know which trustees were acting with former Pres. Herbert in promoting Sampson's hiring 2 years ago. They've done untold damage to this basketball program.
  • easy
Armon Bassett is shooting at Assembly with Crean. Just FYI.
  • TomCoverdaleIUHero
This sounds great the team might be better off then we all think next year Basset and Crawford will flourish in thi style of game
  • southsidehitmen
Big A: But did Crean take the chance on him or did Buckley? I find it hard to imagine Wade not going to Marquette if Buckley wasn't there, his only other option was friggen Illinois State.

As for Basset, at least statistically it looked like he played hard when Dakich was coach. He was the only other player besides D.J. White to show up against Arkansas.

I still don't think the decision to keep him and Ellis should be based on whether or not they'll need them to be competitive, but I wouldn't be completely opposed to them being back next season.
  • ricbraun
When Marquette signed D-Wade, it was not nearly the program it is today. It was probably on par with Illinois State. Crean was just getting started with turning that program around. It speaks to the ability of Crean and his assistants to spot talent and coach talent when they can find a guy like D-Wade and turn him into star, so it isn't something I would dismiss so easily
  • Buckley saw Wade and mentioned him to Crean.
  • Kelin Blab
It is absolutely amazing ALLLLL the consequences IU continues to pay with the hiring of KS. No Ebanks or Holloway.......the problems continue and when will it end? Again another reason to fire Greeny
