Herald-Times: E-mails take full burden off Greenspan for Sampson hire

by in Media | April 3rd, 2008

email-plug-in2.gifThis shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to anyone out there, but according to some e-mails the Bloomington Herald-Times acquired via an open records request, Rick Greenspan shouldn’t quite be the fall guy for the Sampson hire. As there have been rumblings about since Sampson was in hot water this season, former IU President Adam Herbert as well as some trustees had a hand in the decision making process as well.

… former Indiana University Alumni Association President Ken Beckley told current IUAA President Tom Martz that there were ultimately far more people responsible for Sampson’s hiring.

“In my opinion, Rick had input in the hiring of Sampson but certainly at least one trustee and the president (Adam W. Herbert) led the charge to hire Sampson,” Beckley wrote. “Rick, of course, is the front guy to the public. I think the university needs to step up and say that whatever happens in regard to Kelvin Sampson will be a university decision that involves the president, trustees, and director of athletics and not leave Rick hanging out there by himself. Unfair.”

[ ... ]

“Thank you Ken…” Greenspan wrote. “As you and I have confidentially discussed, a couple of Trustees and (Herbert) have more than fingerprints on this.”

Again, this isn’t that shocking of a revelation. In fact: I would be more surprised if IU’s president, director of athletics and trustees didn’t all have input on a new basketball coach. It’s a big decision, one that needs to be viewed from all sides by multiple figureheads at the university. In any event, this should at least provide some justification to back off the “Greenspan needs to go” train a bit. At least I would think.

Thanks for setting this straight but for those who invested so much in bashing him they probably won't change their mind.

Herbert is another one of IU's gigantic screwups. Trying to be PC always backfires. He had no business being in charge of a Big Ten school.

Most people did know there were higher powers in this situation. I don't care what happens to greeny as long as he stays out of Crean's way.

I've been for keeping Greenspan. I think he has done a good job, and I think Crean's hiring will make him look even better. We are headed in the right direction in a lot of regards.

I am for keeping him as well. I really think he was wrongly demonized for Sampson being hired. I always heard rumours that his #1 choice was Kevin Stallings. I can't say enough about Tom Crean this time!!!

Not that I agree with giving Greespan a free pass on the Sampson hiring, but for argument sake I'll do just that. What everyone seems to forget he is also responsible for overseeing that all the athletic programs follow NCAA rules. How could Sampson make all these calls and no one in the admistration find out. How hard is it to follow up with recruits to ensure that they weren't contacted during the period that contact wasn't allowed? Sure, even if they catch him after the first improper phone call we still probably go down the road of dismissing him and finding a new coach BUT we wouldn't be facing the same level of NCAA sanctions and the IU reputation would not have been as damaged.

I still say I don't want this man running the program.

What everyone seems to forget is the good greenspan is doing in other sports, the football program had its best season in almost 20 years, the basketball program has been doing well despite kelvin, men's soccer lost in the NCAA tourney to the eventual national champs, Swimming and diving is good, womens basketball is improving, new buildings and facilities are either being built or being worked on. Greenspan is good at his job, be glad he found out about Sampson before the NCAA did.

I see your point…BUT…I will say that I am not clear on all of the facts with that either. I am not sure who was responsible for overseeing and auditing what the IU coaching staff was doing when it came to recruiting. I do believe that the buck stops with the boss…Mr. Greenspan…but when it came to light what had happened…I do believe that the university took appropriate action…maybe not quite quickly enough…but it did.

I agree with your points…especially about the facilities…and remember…he brought in Coach Hep…God Bless Him…and imagine what the program might have been if he were still alive. I hope Coach Lynch can continue what Coach Hep started.

Yes, this is what the scuttlebutt – backchannel sources have been saying, that this was a Herbert and some of the Trustees production for the Sampson hiring. I'm not a Greenspan fan but knowing IU like I do, I was not shocked to see that Herbert (brought in by the Trustees who ultimately hired Sampson) was the driving force.
Seeing that Ken Beckley – a good, honorable guy from my interactions with him – is the source clinches it for me.
That said, the horse is dead. The Crean ahs risen to the top!

Unfortunately, Lynch is a complete moron. I have been to over 100 BigTen football games in my short life (Go Wildcats!… I mean Hoosiers!) but Lynch is by far the least knowledgeable, most stubborn, worst coach I have ever seen. He doesn't use his players to their fullest extent and he refuses to change offensive and defensive schemes during games. He will be fired before this contract expires

There is not the least thing that would make one believe that the IU Football Program would be better had Hep lived. What Hep did was give everyone the belief that things would be better. Hep “talked the talk” but did not have time to prove that he could “walk the walk.”

Hep was enthusiastic and Hep brought us hope for the future but Bill Lynch has and will do nothing.
