Well you don't know until you try, and nobody is even giving him a chance. What do we do, not try and reach someone because we are afraid to be rejected. I got used to rejection in high school. We have to try.

Our athletic department is inept and has been for quite some time. Last week, one of my professors who served on the athletic committee for over 20 years until the very late 90s took a whole class period to explain to us how poorly run the department is.

He also is an indianapolis attorney and has worked with "Blue Ribbon" committee head Harry Gonso and explained him as someone who "doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground". Scary, isn't it?

Billy Clyde? The Kentucky coach coming to Indiana? That just sounds ugly, not to mention, living in Louisville, all I hear about is all the stuff Gillispie "supposedly" gets himself in to. For instance, I've heard multiple accounts of being pulled over driving under the influence, not to mention some garbage about hookers. I know these are just rumors, but rumors usually have some basis of truth. He is a great coach, but the fact that he is the Kentucky coach, crippled with the rumors, is too much to consider.

Thanks Jerry...Appreciate it.

I mentioned this a few weeks ago, but what I like about Dixon or Wright (recruiting wise) is that they have ties to NYC and the east coast. I don't buy the "must have Indiana or Big Ten recruiting ties" argument. I'd rather have someone with ties outside the area.

Whoever the Indiana coach is, is going to be able to recruit the state and mid-west. Hell it's Indiana. But, if that coach also has ties in NYC, Philly, DC/Baltimore then we are in real good shape.

I have to admit it was painful watching the Kansas game yesterday. If I remember correctly both Bradon Rush and Darrell Arthur chose between Kansas and IU, plus Sherron Collins is from Chicago. All I could think all game long is "what could have been".

Sorry for the long post, but we really need a recruiting closer with this hire...I thought that was going to be Bennett.

We are not to the point of panic yet BUT if the next coach IU tries for tuns us down, it will be time for trembling.

I think the IU reputation, coaching carrousel, pressure to right all our basketball wrongs was just to intimidating for Bennett. If that is true the best thing that could happen was his turn down.

We need a coach who believes enough in himself to know he can take IU to better things. Who is not afraid to match his abilities with the history of IU and add to it.

This will be a very interesting few days. It may well be that our next coach will be a lot like Sampson. He may be a well established coach with a good record whose name will make us fans say "who."

I just hope the next coach is as good a coach as Sampson, without the propensity for cheating.

I read the Dixon background and its very very impressive. He would be my next target along w JAY WRIGHT ( see that B_MD ? ).

If we are going to reach into the Colonial then before that lets talk to Keno Davis first. He did alot with nothing this year.

I love Lavin as much as the next guy, but he's on record as saying he has no interest in the job.

“IU is not a fit for me,” Lavin said. “Here would not the place for me to achieve my balance, and that more than anything, having balance if I coach again, will be most important.”

Sorry, up-and-coming coaches also have uncertainty associated with them. Besides, what makes you certain that Grant would take the job if offered? Bennett didn't.

Next?

and I disagree with you because in my opinion anthony grant is a great up and coming coach and i feel he can be the one to set shop for 20 years. I'm not saying that Montgomery is not a good coach but guess what, if we hire someone we know has to replaced 5-10 years so will recruits and rival coaches who will cast a further sense of uncertainty. Thats the nature of the game. The one thing this program does not need is uncertainty and thats what montgomery brings to the table. like it or not.

Hiring Montgomery does us no good. he might be able to continue making us a 1st round knock out in the tourney. If he comes i say at least 1 player will go and thats being nice. He has to try and recruit to get some guys in for next year again. We will almost undoubtedly be NIT bound next year. Other coaches will use his age and how long he will be here against him. It would take him at least 3 years to get a decent team possibly. By then he is almost 65. If he coulnd;t win a championship in the past 30 yrs what makes think he can in the next few?

I grew up w a former 3 year starter and captain of 2 UCLA nat'l champs ( from Indiana ). He told me he helped lead the effort to get Lavin replaced . I asked why an ddid not get a real insightful answer but he was not well respected and the howland history speaks for itself. I personally like Lavin.

I could have sworn CBS gave credit to Pelfrey for Fla recruiting. I watched 3 games Grant coached this year and despite having a strong team returning they underachieved...........................which is the LAST thinng I ever want to see again at IU

Totally disagree with your bottom line.

One of the primary problems we are having is that:

(a) No one wanted to immediately follow Bob Knight, especially after how it went down, then

(b) No one wanted to pick up the pieces after Mike Davis' tenure, then

(c) No one wants to clean up the mess that Kelvin left.

People like Hutchens keep saying "IU is still a destination job. One of the most attractive coaching jobs in the country." (paraphrase)

Really? Because I totally don't see it. We have tradition, a rabid fan base, improving facilities, and we're in a great basketball state. Why aren't the prime-time coaches beating down our door? Why are the top up-and-coming coaches rebuffing our feelers?

Because they don't want to clean up our mess. Because they don't want to enter a situation in turmoil, especially one that is already a fishbowl to work in.

Montgomery only has 5-10 years left? Fine! Let him come in and get us back on track. Give him a chance to give the next coach something to build on. Seemed to work pretty damn well for Matta and Miller at Xavier, each building on the prior coach's success, among other programs.

My bottom line is that it is damn hard to bring in the best and the brightest when the situation looks like a bunch of broken eggs and shells lying around, rather than an omelet. 5-10 years can be a damn long time in college basketball--look how long the Davis years seemed. I'll take Montgomery in a heartbeat to right the ship, *then* we'll be a place that every hot young coach in the country will want to come and set up shop for 20-30 years.

People like Hutchens keep saying “IU is still a destination job. One of the most attractive coaching jobs in the country.” (paraphrase)

Steve Lavin. He's looking better and better in my eyes. Great for publicity purposes. Clean cut guy. Has a little flare to him that could appeal to younger guys. Hangs around with Erin Andrews. From what I can pick up on his commentary during games, he sounds like a great Xs and Os coach and has a great understanding for the game. Also, a little sidenote, he has covered the Big10 the past couple of years so he knows how it operates and would know what to expect on offense and defense from other Big10 schools.

I agree with Raymond in that we need to keep the lines of communication open with Bennett. I really don't think its over with him. At least I'm hoping its not. Bennett is such a stud and a class act.

I think the biggest compliment a coach can receive is when Donavan left for Orlando Magic he wanted anthony grant to take over the coaching spot. The florida athletic department wanted him, before donovan wanted to come back. I don't care what anyone says but The florida athletic department has a way better clue on what to do than ours. Guys if we find ourselves in the situation that everyone is going to say no, we should not settle for kruger or montgomery and not be afraid to take a chance.
