I saw this when it aired, that thing about Jordan at the end killed me.

  • T

Totally off topic….But one of my buddies threw out the name Lawrence Frank for a potential head coach at IU.

I'm not sure whether I think that's a good idea or a bad one…or if it's even possible, but I was intrigued….that much is certain.

  • Tom Coverdale IU Hero

i really think if dakich does well he will be the coach and if not i will feel extremely bad for him because this will be his only oppurtunity for i think he has the potential being a defensive minded coach he already has the respect from the players to me the onyl question is his recruiting ability they could bring in people to do the recruiting for him i do hope if he is not named head coach the future coach keeps him as assistant head coach or associate head coach because i will feel very poorly for him if he doesnt have anything to do with IU basketball again after this situation

ESPN hires Bob M Knight as Tourney Analyst. Talk about some good times, I wonder how he'll comment on IU.

I saw the same thing, and I can't wait for the hilariousness.

  • JamesHardy

for all the RMK faithful…please tell me you heard him on Mike n Mike in ESPN Radio about 2 minutes ago??? Any thoughts of him coming in like the Knight In Shining Armor…you can forget about it. Greeny tried twice to ask him a question about Indiana…#1) was about KS and the scandal #2) was about what he would do if IU called about a coaching position…
His answer to #1 was that he hasn't followed the situation enough to comment on it.
His answer to #2 was “let's get on something a more relavent”….

He told Greeny that he appreciated his journalistic persistance, but sometimes when you dig a hole, you hit a rock and have to stop…

God I love and miss that guy!

  • kelin

James I heard it and he seems to still HATE IU……….and NEVER has talked about it since he left….

  • td

As much as I liked Coach Knight, he has not handled the situation very well. His type of personality always likes to get in the last word on diagreement with anyone. Thus, the courtcase was his last chance to get in a last word and it failed. He's still surly about it. Of course, I didn't think the administration handled his dismissal very well either.

  • tberry

I think if he does well all the old Knight crony supporters will be there pushing him just like Mike Davis BUT any of the coaches there could have done as good a job with this team.

Get off the “Knight players are gods” crap and find a proven winner for IU's program.

  • The wounds between Knight and the university simply run too deep. There are still a great number of faculty members on that campus that resent Bob Knight and would be vocal in their opposition to him being brought back on. Lawrence Frank is an interesting name to throw out there but as this thing goes on, I think IU fans are really becoming attached to Dan Dakich. He's the underdog, the kind of sentimental favorite and there's a very good chance that he could coach his way into a head coaching job. Only time will tell but I thought the PTI interview yesterday showed a sign of Dan Dakich that is very affable and personable and funny and it will be very interested to see if the affinity that IU fans feel for him lasts throughout the season. If IU is somehow manage to get a win this weekend at Michigan State, it could go a long way towards Dakich's future at IU and how hard people will begin to campaign for him to be kept on.

I can say this one of two things will happen…..they will NEVER name ANYTHING after RMK at IU or they will name something after him be either way he WILL NOT step foot on that campus.

I cannot see that ever happening. I would rather this morning Greeny ask him about how he thinks Dak will do as interim coach. I do not believe him when he says he doesn't know enough about the situtation to comment on it…..my wife could care less about IU but she knows KS is an idiot for doing what he did. ……

  • JamesHardy

WOW…what a loaded question…”Did Coach Sampson get treated fairly?” WOW!
I'm more impressed with his answer to that question than anything else. I love his charisma…his humor…his attitude. The more I see him, hear him, and watch this team, the more I feel he's the right guy. Disregard the “Mike Davis Situation” cuz they are apples and oranges…Davis wasn't an IU guy…Davis didn't see the IU job as the pinnacle of his career…Davis used IU as a stepping stone…NONE OF THESE ARE TRUE ABOUT DD!

  • td

I like his charisma, humor, and attitude as well, and I hope there's a place for DD at IU. It's just not the head coaching position. If we're truly a top-tier program, we should not be taking anymore chances after all that has happened. This next hire needs to be right on unless we want to change the goal of winning (it all!) with integrity.

  • briank

Yeah you know they will make sure he ends up having to comment on IU

  • MikeyD

Knowing Bobby, he probably stipulated not to cover IU.

  • briank

I would like someone to explain how DD is qualified to run IU as our next head coach. I'm a Knight guy but there are no realistic Knight discples out there right now that are qualified to coach at a top tier school like IU. Your graspign at straws if you try to come up with a reason. How do you think we got him as president of basketball operations in June? Nobody was exactly beating down his door to come coach for them. He is a good guy who hopefully will stay on in an asst spot or something like that. The next IU head coach shouldn't come from a coaching stint where he was barely above 500 and had 4 out of 5 losing seasons his last 5 seasons there.

A couple of thoughts on DD:

It's kinda like taking a new job where there are a lot of women working…lots of nice looking women, and you are , btw, looking for a girlfriend/wife, etc. You're eyeballing a few of the real hotties, but there is an “average” girl in the next cubical. Low and behold, you begin chatting…you end up have lunch together a couple of times…she seems “nice enough”…you end up on a date together…sleep with her…start getting some feelings for each other…and BOOM…your in a relationship with your 4th or 5th pick. All the hotties know you are dating her and cool their enthusiasm, and you're stuck. Hard to explain, but maybe some of you get what I mean…kinda like “settling”.

The other point on DD is that other than his marginal coaching win/loss record, there will be no one who will interview better for the job. He's smart, clean cut, loves IU, played for IU, coached for IU, and potentially may have recently won some significant games for IU as an interim. He's in the driver's seat for the position. It's back to my former analogy. It's a tough call. He's got a hell of a good chance to get the job. Knowing the IU admin, alum and that certain portion of the fan base, I bet he gets the job (unless the team tanks).

  • Mike Greenburg tried asking him about the question this morning on the radio, and Knight deflected it, saying he doesn't know enough about the situation to comment. Greenburg tried to press him, and Knight calmly reiterated that he had no comment on the situation and to get off it.

  • Yeah, I was disappointed that in all that “journalistic digging”, he didn't ask what he thought about Dakich. Or even tell us a funny story about Dak. But then again, it's Mike Greenburg. We're lucky he didn't curl up in a ball and whimper.

  • kelin

I haven't done the numbers on this but I believe McCallum has done better than Dak coaching wise…..I don't believe Dak made the NCAA tourney wtih Bowling Green…..if we hire Dak i think Mike Davis should get an interview…..

No prob. Sadly enough, it's pretty close to mine also, post high school/college (now that was a BANANZA!).

Yeah. Like I said Im a Knight faithful. Right now this has set us back 1-2 yrs. If we hire DD we are set back at least 5 yrs. My son is 8. I would like for him to see an IU championship before he is out of his teens. IU has struckout twice. Hopefully 3rd time is a charm.
