Hoosiers fall to No. 11 in latest coaches’ poll

Kelvin SampsonAs expected following Saturday’s 68-63 loss to Connecticut, Indiana took a tumble in the ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll released Monday afternoon.

Indiana (17-2) is now No. 11, just ahead of their opponent on Thursday, No. 13 Wisconsin. Michigan State is the highest ranked Big Ten team at No. 7.

The top four spots in the poll remained unchanged: Memphis, Kansas, Duke and North Carolina.

Connecticut is the second team listed under “others receiving votes” after snapping IU’s 29-game winning streak at Assembly Hall.

Update: The Hoosiers are also No. 11 in the Associated Press poll.

how the hell is uconn not ranked? they beat 2 top 15 teams last week, marquette and obviously iu. they destroyed marquette. ridiculous

  • Agree with you Ricky.

I'd take them over Kansas State and Mississippi State. Don't forget they also won another road game last week at Cincinnati.

I agree with the comment about UConn. They are certainly underrated.

Also, the picture of Kelvin shows too much skin. I'm offended.
    haha

Obviously UConn is under rated and I'm surprised we are ranked as high as we are. If UConn isn't ranked and they beat us on our home floor I would have thought we would have slipped further. According to the poll's logic we should have tumbled further if an unranked team beat us.

Based on who we've played and who we've won and lost to, I think we are the biggest paper tiger of the top 15. We clearly were that of the top 10.

Wisconsin is coming off a frustrating loss on the road . . . I don't see that game going well, but I still think we are in a good position to make a run at the B10 regular season title. We haven't lost any conference games were were supposed to win, yet, and that's key.

I tend to agree that IU was a “paper tiger” in the top ten, but not in the top 15. All teams are prone to poor games, and we've actually pulled off a couple of victories in games that we did not play well (Minn. being the best example).

I too think Wis. will be tough. But, looking around the Big 10, there is no reason to think that IU isn't the best team and isn't capable of the 16 game sweep. Realistically, that doesn't happen and one of the two toughest tests comes this week. I think IU could, realistically, wind up 13-3 in conference and win the Big 10 title. That finish should be enough for the Hoosiers to wind up ranked around # 10, even with the Big 10 being down this year.

    I can't wait for Thurs.

At least we're ranked the same in both polls. That always makes me happy.

  • Dale

ALH_00, the big 10 season is 18 games.

    The polls are dumb.

I'm more worried about playing Wisconsin, although they didn't look great against Purdue, you never want to lose two straight. It reminds me of the Davis “era.”

I expect us to look good against UW and get a win.

Wisconsin is coming off a loss as well, and they are in the more desperate situation because they're playing at home and already have lost one conference game.

This is a much bigger game for Wisconsin then it is for the Hoosiers, which makes me nervous that IU will once again be out-hustled and drop their second straight.

Ok after a few days I have chalked it up to a bad game and time to move on. I think we could beat Wisconsin up there with better effort and coaching.

I do not know if I can watch Mike White and DeAndre Thomas pretend to be basketball players anymore. Mike: You lost your redshirt opportunity in basketball (thank God), maybe you should talk to Coach Lynch about the possibility of playing foorball. DeAndre: You should thank us from saving you from a heart attack, but you could lose another 50 and still not be in basketball shape. Why do we continue to put these guys on the court? When will Eli Holman return or is he redshirting? Can Kyle Taber possibly be any worse? I wish James Hardy wasn't such a big NFL prospect. DJ needs some help. Why can't we get 7-footers anymore?

This picture of Kelvin definitely shows too much skin…just like the past pics of Rachel Bilson and such that were ever so highly offensive….Ugh.

  • hmmm…0-2 vs. RPI top 50, 128 strength of schedule rating, best win Illinois State.

Yeah, that sounds like the 11th best team in the country to me.

  • ALH_00

noted. for some reason I was under the (false) impression the last few years that there were 16 conference games because of the tourney. I guess it would help if I could count. My math skills notwithstanding, I still think we could get out of the conference with 2 or 3 losses. I'm not saying that's likely, but I definitely think it's possible.
