The Morning After: Wisconsin

by in Morning After | January 31st, 2008

dairy.jpgE was good and worked up tonight, so technically, this is the minute after. You get the point.

After UConn essentially dismantled IU last Saturday, there were two overriding points of view. The first was to assume that IU played poorly, met an athletic team that neutralized its strengths, and suffered a weird blip on the schedule that ended up in a loss. If anything, the loss was a positive; surely the Hoosiers would bounce back even more focused, right?

The second point of view was the sinking feeling of despair that maybe, just maybe, the Hoosiers weren’t nearly as good as most of us have given them credit for. That maybe the schedule is that bad; that maybe IU couldn’t stand up when the competition fought back; that maybe the Hoosiers aren’t destined to play late into March like most of us dreamed they would since Eric Gordon put his pen to paper.

Last night, we found out which of these approaches is more accurate. And it definitely isn’t the first.

– First, the injury. For all of the Belichickian skulduggery by IU’s media relations department — and the curious way EJ’s father dodged telling Erin Andrews exactly what the injury was — it’s pretty obvious that the left wrist is in bad shape. A typical bump or bruise doesn’t require a bandage. To think that the bandage will be on for “a few weeks”, but that there’s no swelling or a break or anything wrong, nope, nothing to see here, move along … well, that’s just silly.

And it deeply affects the Hoosiers. All year this team has struggled to play a cohesive offensive scheme. Instead, it’s relied on D.J.’s efficiency in the post, Gordon’s creativity from the perimeter, and fill-in-the-blanks stuff from a constant rotation of bit players (some more effective than others). With Gordon’s left wrist clearly limiting some of the things he can do — like, say, move to his left — IU loses a vital piece in the one-on-one scheme it’s been thriving in against lesser opponents.

PostmanE breaks down IU and Wisconsin

by in Podcast | January 31st, 2008

Our very own PostmanE was on the Big EZ Show this evening with Zach McCrite on Louisville’s ESPN Radio 93.9 the Ticket breaking down the Hoosiers and the Badgers.

Not only is E one fine looking lad, he’s also one hell of an analyst. Audio of his appearance, for your listening pleasure, below:

*Note: In the future, please direct all scheduling questions to the IU Athletic Department.

Inside The Hall Podcast No. 3: We’re back … and worse than ever

by in Podcast | January 31st, 2008

Hey look, we did another podcast! On it, we delve into tonight’s game and Eric Gordon’s status. Things to listen for:

  • The debut of Big A. Get pumped.
  • The music fade in and out are awful at the beginning. Sorry. It was late; I was tired.
  • We explain who Terry Hutchens is in case you weren’t sure.
  • We recorded this last night but tried to speak as if we recorded it this morning. As such, we say “tomorrow” instead of “tonight” a few times. Forgive us, ITH faithful.
  • I think E’s catchphrase for his sign off is “I’m gonna go take a nap.” Sort of like “Goodnight and good luck” only less inspiring.

Sit back, relax and listen right now.

Gordon Sr: EJ will play against Wisconsin

by in Media | January 30th, 2008

Eric GordonJeff Rabjohns of the Indianapolis Star has the scoop on Eric Gordon’s wrist injury and it seems the message board rumors were blown out of proportion (shocking!):

“He did injure his wrist, but there’s no swelling,” Eric Gordon Sr. said. “He’s going to be able to play. What they’ll probably do is put some protective padding on it, and he’ll play.”

The report goes on to say that Gordon came down on his non-shooting wrist during practice while trying to break his fall.

Everyone is now free to exhale and go on with your day. Because if the rumors were indeed true, I was probably going to cry. And you probably were too.

Let’s hope this isn’t something that has any lasting effect on Gordon the rest of the way. All eyes will definitely be on his wrist tomorrow night in Madison.

The Four Spot: Who ya got?

by in Commentary | January 30th, 2008

mike_white.jpg(Yes, we are aware of the Eric Gordon wrist injury rumors floating around various message boards. We’ll keep you updated if anything official comes to the surface. Now, onward…)

Ahh, the four spot. No doubt about it, the lack of production from this particular position has been a killer for the Hoosiers in their two losses. Here are the numbers and there’s no way around it, they’re ugly:

Xavier: Lance Stemler and DeAndre Thomas combined for 31 minutes, four points, seven rebounds, one block and eight fouls.

Connecticut: Lance Stemler, DeAndre Thomas and Mike White combined for 34 minutes, five points, four rebounds, no blocks and two fouls.

Now, before I dig into this deeper, first let me say that I’m not expecting one of these three fine gentlemen to morph into Luke Harangody. That would be too good to be true (and really awesome).

What I would like to see is some form of consistent contribution from this position. Guys, you don’t even have to score. That’s already covered. Play good defense, take a few charges, rebound on occasion and I’m ecstatic. That said, it’s just not happening right now. So let’s examine the three choices and then get your take (OK, I might give mine too) on who the best option is to get the bulk of the minutes.
