witt, come on now...do you really think college coaches have enough time to walk out-of-state high school kids home from school and tuck them into bed? some kids are up to no good, but an outsider wouldn't know the difference. sure, i agree it's disheartening to hear that one of the recruits was pushing drugs and another pushing refs, but that has little to do with sampson. as for pushing the ref, eli holman has already paid his punishment for that. it could also be said that eli holman is doing quite well for a kid coming out of richmond high school...it's not exactly the suburban high school that graduates honor students with squeaky clean criminal records. as for a graduation rate, the last early departure for a hoosier team wasn't on a kelvin sampson team...and no one said that eric gordon has made any decision yet. as for the whole ks business, i do think he makes a great coach. what he is under scrutiny over right now is so minor that it makes me sick that he was foolish enough to do it. it was minor...and very little was gained in comparison to what could potentially be lost. i hope he and the admin get their shit straight. there is no reason to have something so foolish tarnish what has been, and still is, a prominent program with a class act.

Witt....there are no perfect players or kids. Eli made a mistake. If you dig deep enough EVERY SINGLE player has done something wrong in College basketball. Should we put Eli in jail and throw away the key for making a dumb mistake that he obviously has matured from. While you mention Bud and Eli....which should not be in the same sentence...I find it interesting you don't metion Matt Roth, Derek Elston, Devin Ebanks, Jordan Crawford...or even Eric Gordon....here are some kids that haven't sold drugs or pushed a ref..and they all were recruited by KS...yet we selectively mention Bud who is not a hoosier and Eli who made a MISTAKE. The easy thing to do in our society today is judge and discard..unfortunately we do that with kids to often. If you were at Hoosier Hysteria..the kid with the BIGGEST smile and most enthusiasm was Eli Holman...

and witt I won't even give you a full list of players based on this comment you said...c'mon...
"I’m pretty sure professional sports teams often evaluate a player’s character before signing them to a contract.".........are you kidding me....Leon Smith, Ryan Leaf, Mike Vick, T.O....Artest....How about who Bob signed one year...Jay Edwards....didn't mention him!

I would also like to add that the question is:

Is Kelvin Sampson the right coach for Indiana?

Not:

Should Kelvin Sampson be fired?

I feel like you are making a lot of assumptions about my stance. I agree that student athlete graduation requirements are often dumbed down, however, at Duke, their student athlete's are graduating. I don't expect Gordon to finish his degree here and wait around to get injured.

Also, in reference to Bud Mackey, he isn't the only questionable recruit Kelvin has brought to IU. I'm pretty sure Eli Holman missed some playing time because he pushed a ref. How many more before it's just a random isolated incident? I'm pretty sure professional sports teams often evaluate a player's character before signing them to a contract.

I'm not suggesting that there is a better replacement for Coach Sampson, but more asking that his services be carefully evaluated before giving him free will to ruin or flourish one of the best basketball PROGRAMS in the country.

I knew it I knew it I knew it.....sooner or later Bud Mackey would be lumped with Kelvin Sampson. I agree he should be blamed for Bud dealing drugs, he should be responsible for not bringing our troops home, and KS is responsible for Brittany Spears losing her kids.

Does anyone blame Bob for Isaih screwing up the Knicks and calling an employee the B-word? PALEASE....Bud Mackey....

If Bob was still worth being here he would be here. I find it interesting no one is saying bring back Mike Davis...no violations, no choking, ......

Comparing to Duke? Duke had paid players and didn't even get hardly looked at by the NCAA. There was no denying it since it was admitted by the player in court. Duke admission requirements? The student athlete requirements for graduation are a tad dumbed down. Complaining about recruiting mackey. Everybody was, nobody knew that was going to happen, please. Witt, I loved Bob Knight to, but take a step back and realize he is gone. Quit trying to get rid of Sampson to get a "IU family" guy in there as coach. Alford hasn't done anything to be a coach and either has hardly any of the others. In reality if that happened we would end up with a next to nobody coach and 5-10 yrs of mediocrity. yes rules were broken but how about we let the common sense punishment fit the crime. How would you feel if he spent the next 10 yrs with a championship or two and no more violations. He would go down as a great coach who had a rocky beginning.

Is Kelvin Sampson the right coach?

I believe Kelvin Sampson is the right coach for the right now. Unfortunately, IU isn't a program that right now is all we want. He can recruit, he can win games, he can turn high school ballers into the NCAA elite. However, he can't develop a program that garners nationwide respect. Much a Coach Knights praise was in his ability to create men from boys, as much as it was the win-loss over his storied career. Kelvin, on the other hand, is bringing in whatever it takes - including soon to be convicted drug dealers - to win games. I'm partially surprised he hasn't investigated Pacman Jone's NCAA Basketball eligibility. It is my belief that elite high school players will make a commitment based on the program, and not the immediate success and promises a coach can make - see Duke admissions requirements. In order to maintain a high level success over the long-term a coach must be able to turn boys into men, demand hard work on the court and in the classroom (A.J. Ratliff), and play their role as coach and their role in life by the rules.

Who is responsible?

I agree completely that this is a combined failure of the Athletic Administration and the coaching staff. I would like to take this space to commend the intern that had the nerve and maturity to actually report possible evidence to high authorities. In a program this large, it would be conceivable to sweep things under the rug and I'm impressed that the little man stood up to the boss man.

What will the NCAA do?

Hopefully they will take a stand. Personally, I am sick and tired of the unethical actions across the board in sports. Michael Vick, Tim Donaghy, USC Football, BALCO, Tour de France. It's getting to the point where money via success in sports is overpowering the true spirit of the games. If league officials (for any and every league) can't start to take a stand for integrity in sports, then who will?

Unbelievable!

Obviously, the product on the court and in recruiting have been encouraging under KS. On the other hand, these blatant violations and the academic troubles that the program has to overcome (whomever's fault that is) make me want to burn my Indiana paraphernalia.

This program is really at a crossroad now. Will they get back to dominating basketball played by quality student-athletes? Or, will they simply become another NBA developmental league program where winning at any cost is the MO, even at the expense of the athlete-students they exploit?

As a lifelong fan and alum, I certainly will not stand for the latter. I agree with you Big A, if they get banned from the tournament, we'll see a new coach on the sidelines...as it should be.

Get you act together Sampson!

Where the hell is Dan Dakich in all of this mess? Who is responsible to monitor strict compliance? And yes, The "fire" for the upcoming season has been to some extent squelched because of the moronic repeat violations.
