Is Ben Allen transferring? Yes, he is.

allen.jpg(UPDATE: It’s confirmed. Allen is indeed transferring.)

Well, according to Pete Diprimio over at the Fort Wayne News-Sentinal, it’s looking like the Australian isn’t returning to IU this year.

All signs point that Allen, a native of Australia, will not return and join the Hoosiers. Instead, he’s expected to transfer, perhaps to St. Mary’s in California.

Allen, who had spent part of the summer playing for the Australian national team, was set to return to Bloomington later this week. Classes will begin on Monday.

I’ve always been a bit of a BA fan, but he just never fit in anywhere. Allen came here as a 3-point threat, but with his size and IU’s depleted front line the last few years, he was thrust into a post position, one he never wholly became comfortable with even after all Kelvin Sampson’s efforts. And with the Hoosiers actually having some size upfront for the first time in a while, Allen just has nowhere to play now.

If IU makes an official announcement on this, we’ll let you know.

Thanks to ITH reader Kelin for the tip on this one.

  • ben allen is one of my favorite players. i remember the indiana state game a few years ago where he was the only one who seemed to care. if his leaving is a definite, i will be very sorry to see him go. that would mean 2 of my favorites – the other being joey shaw, will have transfered in 1 year. but i don’t see where he’ll find a whole lot of playing time, even if he is playing at a very high level. i wish him the best no matter where he goes.

I was kinda looking at BA as the wild card this year, given he had a year under his belt to learn the post. I wish him well and wish he would change his mind. I can’t see him just being a collegiate 6’11 three point shooter. What I don’t like, is that puts more pressure on Eli to develope early and opens up more time for Mike White (My new wild card).

  • I think Ben Allen’s mishandling is the one lingering mistake from Kelvin’s first year. I understand that Sampson needed more post help last year, but KS literally destroyed Allen’s psyche (which was soft to begin with, but still) and totally confused him about his role on the court. I’m not saying Allen should have had free reign to play whatever position he wanted — he’s 6 freakin’ 11, after all — but a little flexibility from Sampson last year might have preserved Allen as a versatile offensive threat, and a great role player for this year’s postseason potential.

  • With that said, anyone who puts product in his hair for games and wears two polos at the same time deserves to be berated regularly.

Nice two shirt comment. I do disagree somewhat with the handling of Big BA…I think a coaches job is to put the team in the best position to win and develope a player at the same time. We had enough 3pt shooters and shooting last year, that adding BA just wasn’t what we needed. We needed another big man in the middle. Yes BA has a nice shot, but he is 6’11 and at some point in his career he needs to learn the post. He could have helped this year and I hope he changes his mind cause St. Mary’s is a very strict school and has a strict ONE SHIRT policy!

Unfortunate news. However, I can’t blame him, because there wasn’t going to be much playing time for Ben Allen with all of our options in the post now. And we all know he wasn’t going to find time at a position outside of the paint, though that’s where he probably prefers to play.

This also gives us yet another scholarship option for next year, if this ends up becoming true. We should find out pretty soon, with the team getting to practice for that vacation to the Bahamas.

I liked him as a freshman, but last year I didn’t get the sense that he was really improving very much. You never want to see anyone leave the program, but if he’s going to get the chance to play more elsewhere, I really can’t blame him.

I played small college basketball and coached high school basketball and maybe at age 36 I am out of touch with how basketball works now….BUT at what point did any coach besides KS try to teach this 6’11 kid how to play post. For crying outloud, having a jumpshot is great but you are still 6’11 right?

Is it just me or am I missing something these days……Ben Allen is a post at IU, St.Mary, and anywhere else in the world.

Can anyone say Mandeville…The kid only average 0.8 pts/game last year. The good news is that with the White twins back, Eli, and DeAndre we finally have a front line…and I’m pretty sure he was thinking about all of that Pine Time. He is outa here.

Adam Ahfeld will be lonely this year…BA is off the website. Does anyone know if St. Mary’s is Div. I?

I think Benny A has alot more skill to show, New start, new college, new game. I’m looking to what the kids got up his sleeve (or sleeves, given previous comments about the double polo. I think it’s a good look btw).

I think he was on the Autralian National team during the London Olympics. I liked him and hated to see him go.
